Smoking Cessation in Mental Health Communities: A Living Newspaper Applied Theatre Project

An applied theatre play was created and performed by the authors in unision with outpatients at a psychiatric hospital.  This play was targeted towardsfellow psychiatric patients and healthcare professionals, and explored the relation between mental health and tobacco addiction. This article by Jerke, Prendergast, and Dobson describes how  the Living Newspaper form refined and informed the participants' anti-oppressive arts-based data collection, in comparison with Brown and Strega’s central tenets of anti-oppressive research, The author's mention in their concluding suggetions that arts-based, anti-oppressive research can be continually advanced by the Living Newspaper form, after it has been improved with several minor updates.
