Arts-Based Facilitation Field Study
This field study explored the myriad facilitative approaches that are used in the field of ASC/community-engaged participatory arts, including in performance arts, visual and media arts, literary and urban arts, as well as dialogic methods.
It is our hope that these studies will prove useful for the ASC community and for the burgeoning field of social innovation which is defined as… “new ideas that resolve existing social, cultural, economic and environmental challenges and that alter the perceptions, behaviours and structures that previously gave rise to these challenges”
Chataquas
As an exploration of both traditional dialogue and arts-based facilitation techniques, Judith Marcuse led a series of Chataquas (arts-infused workshops/dialogues) across Canada, often in partnership with diverse organizations, such as Ashoka Canada, Creative Manitoba, Community Arts Council of Vancouver (CACV), and the federal Department of Canadian Heritage. Each session investigated a specific topic, including methods, perspectives and issues in the field of ASC; the integration of ASC processes into Canadian and international NGO policies and programs; the re-imagining of a university’s mandate; and federal government policy to address issues of racism in Canada. Performance, literary and visual arts, as well as group processes encouraged participants to think outside more usual frameworks to explore and share what mattered to them. New collective artmaking enabled them to surface, share, and process their experiences and insights. The Chataquas strongly demonstrated the potency and adaptability of arts-infused dialogue to create new directions for identifying and implementing solutions to often-complex issues in a wide variety of contexts. These events also explored new ways to advance possibilities for the development of ASC and community-engaged arts (both within and outside the sector) while nurturing new communication networks, exchange, and possible collaboration across Canada.

The AGEWELL Chataqua Project, May to June, 2014
This unique chataqua project involved the creation of an exhibition of painting, photography, installations, poetry and performance work made by some 100 seniors about what it is like to grow older. During the exhibition in the theatre of the Performing Arts Lodge (PAL) in Vancouver, a series of Chataqua dialogues and arts workshops were offered to the public. All the artwork and the artists’ descriptions of their art and its underlying themes can be viewed in The AGEWELL Booklet.
Cette étude sur le terrain avait pour objectif d’observer la myriade de méthodes de facilitation qui sont utilisées dans le secteur de l’art pour le changement social (ACS) et de l’art communautaire, ces méthodes faisant appel entre autres à l’art performance, aux arts visuels et médiatiques, aux arts littéraires et urbains, et aux approches dialogiques.
Nous espérons que ces études s’avèreront utiles pour le secteur de l’ACS et le domaine florissant de l’innovation sociale, qui se définit comme « de nouvelles idées qui règlent des problèmes sociaux, culturels, économiques et environnementaux existants et modifient les perceptions, les comportements et les structures à l’origine de ces problèmes ».
Chataquas
Dans le but d’explorer tant le dialogue traditionnel que les techniques d’animation basées sur l’art, Judith Marcuse a dirigé une série de Chataquas (dialogues/ateliers à caractère artistique) d’un bout à l’autre du Canada, souvent en partenariat avec différents organismes, notamment Ashoka Canada, Creative Manitoba, Community Arts Council of Vancouver (CACV) et le ministère du Patrimoine canadien. Au cours de chaque séance, un sujet précis était creusé : les méthodes, les points de vue et les problèmes liés au secteur de l’ACS; l’intégration des processus d’ACS dans les politiques et les programmes des ONG du Canada et d’ailleurs; la possibilité de repenser le mandat d’une université; les politiques fédérales mises en place pour régler les problèmes de racisme au Canada. L’art performance, les arts visuels et littéraires ainsi que des processus de groupe étaient utilisés pour encourager les participants à réfléchir et s’exprimer en-dehors des cadres habituels à propos de thèmes chers à leur cœur. La réalisation collective d’une œuvre artistique leur a permis de prendre conscience de leurs expériences et de leurs points de vue, d’en parler et d’y réfléchir. Les Chataquas ont très bien démontré l’efficacité et l’adaptabilité du dialogue à caractère artistique comme moyen novateur de définir et mettre en œuvre des solutions à des problèmes complexes dans divers contextes. Ces rencontres ont aussi servi à explorer de nouvelles façons de développer l’ACS et l’art communautaire (à l’intérieur comme à l’extérieur du secteur) tout en favorisant de nouveaux réseaux de communication, des échanges et des occasions de collaboration dans l’ensemble du Canada.

Le projet AGEWELL, mai à juin 2014
Ce projet unique comportait une exposition de peintures, de photos, d’installations, de poèmes et de performances portant sur le thème du vieillissement, créés par une centaine de personnes âgées. Pendant l’exposition, qui s’est déroulée au Performing Arts Lodge (PAL) à Vancouver, le public a eu l’occasion de participer à des rencontres Chataquas ainsi qu’à des ateliers d’art. L’ensemble des œuvres produites et les démarches artistiques de leurs créateurs sont réunies dans le livret de l’exposition AGEWELL.
