Based on a workshop at the Glace Bay Miners Museum led by Gary Blundell and Victoria Ward, the Mining Legacies exhibition explores the impact of mining on the Cape Breton community. Featuring a range of artistic styles and perspectives, the exhibit highlights the experiences of the artists’ friends and family who have been involved in the mining industry. The opening reception will feature a performance by The Men of the Deeps, a choir of working and retired coal miners from Cape Breton. An artist walk and talk will be held at the exhibit from 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM, Saturday June 27, 2015.
Mining Legacies will run alongside Canary in the Mine: Nova Scotia Mining Disasters and Song, an exhibit that investigates the role of song in documenting, memorializing, and commemorating mining disasters. A talk on Disaster Songs with Heather Sparling will be held on Friday, Aug 2 from 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM. Through multi-generational and interdisciplinary arts, the exhibits offer a unique opportunity to reflect on Canada’s history and future with the mining industry.
