Dancing Parkinson’s YYC at the Creative Calgary Congress

March 25, 2017 by Ann Flynn, ICASC Dance / Community University Dance

Dancing Parkinson’s YYC  demonstrated a typical class at the Creative Calgary Congress in November 2016, providing an impactful presentation on the possibilities of transforming medical practice through performance.

Anne Flynn, Professor Emerita (Dance) in the Faculty of Kinesiology, and Member of the Hotchkiss Brain Institute, was on hand to introduce the demonstration. Launched in 2013 as a pilot project, Dancing Parkinsons YYC provides dance classes to people with Parkinson disease, and their spouses/ friends/ care partners. It is based on the simple belief that DANCING IS GOOD FOR US. With live musical accompaniment and a focus on rhythm, body awareness, muscle development, coordination and socializing, the weekly classes have proven to be an uplifting and restorative experience for participants.

The full article and overview of the demonstration can be accessed on the Creative Calgary Congress here.
