Artists Speak

In-depth interviews with senior and mid-career artists on the unique qualities of their own histories and their thinking on creative practice as it relates to socially-engaged art and community-engagement.

When we reflect on the past it is often in order to ascertain what the future needs to know or come to understand.

Dr. Lynn Fels (Co-investigator on the Art for Social Change! (ASC!) research project), and Dr. Patti Fraser (Post Doctoral, ASC!) initiated this inquiry motivated by thinking about what might best serve those seeking to become the next iteration of practitioners? They arrived at the question through Hannah Arendt’s theorizing as it relates to the education of the young. When we reflect on the past it is often in order to ascertain what the future needs to know or come to understand. Initially when Dr. Patti Fraser first started these interviews she had an interest in asking other artists: what might characterize this art practice and what might define it?
